Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have declared a unilateral ceasefire in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, citing humanitarian concerns. The announcement, made on Monday, follows international calls for safe aid passage and relief for displaced civilians.
The ceasefire comes as the UN reports over 900 deaths and nearly 3,000 injuries from the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, the G7 and EU have condemned the rebel offensive as a violation of DR Congo’s sovereignty.
With over 400,000 people displaced since January, human rights groups are urging international sanctions on Rwanda, accused of backing the rebels. However, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame denies knowledge of his troops’ involvement.
