In a recent publication titled “State of Internet Scams 2023,” Social Catfish, a company specializing in reverse search technology, presented a study that revealed the widespread occurrence of online scam activities on a global scale. The report pinpointed regions such as West Africa notably Nigeria, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia as the main hubs for these activities.

The study indicated that developed nations, including the United States, have become primary targets for scams due to their strong economies, technological advancements, global connectivity, and high levels of financial activity. Interestingly, tech-savvy teenagers are now falling victim to online scams more frequently than seniors.

According to the report, online scams resulted in staggering losses of $10.3 billion in the US during 2022, showing a remarkable increase of 277% from the $2.7 billion reported five years earlier.

The report highlighted various scam types, including investment, romance, and cryptocurrency scams, all leading victims to experience substantial financial setbacks. The average loss per victim surged from $8,142 in 2021 to $12,859 in 2022. Unfortunately, only a small fraction (4.2%) of the stolen funds were successfully recovered in 2022.

The report also revealed that 81% of victims of romance scams feel too ashamed to report these incidents to authorities. Additionally, it proposed that the actual extent of losses due to online scams could be as high as $200 billion, as many victims hesitate to come forward.

The report shed light on the emergence of AI-driven scams, such as ‘voice cloning’ and ‘deepfake’ videos, which adeptly impersonate trusted individuals to deceive victims. As scammers continue to enhance their tactics, maintaining a vigilant stance against such schemes is of utmost importance.

Furthermore, the report delved into the technical aspects of scams, providing insights into phishing tools, botnets, VoIP, malware, ransomware, and social engineering techniques.

Addressing the rise of AI deepfake video scams, the report explored their implications in various contexts and suggested strategies for protection. These strategies include being cautious with unsolicited requests, safeguarding personal information, activating two-factor authentication, staying informed about AI scams, verifying sources of information, and promptly reporting suspicious activity.
