In response to the unwavering commitment of Governor Peter Mbah to the completion of ongoing urban road projects, Enugu State’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Gerald Otiji, has issued a stern warning to construction firms. He stressed that failing to meet the given deadlines would result in sanctions in line with legal provisions and contractual agreements.
Engr. Otiji, during an inspection of road construction sites in the state capital, declared a 20-day ultimatum for the completion of ongoing phase one road projects. He emphasized the urgency for construction companies to mobilize for day and night work to meet the set timelines.
Otiji cautioned that firms unable to fulfill their targets would face blacklisting, restricting their access to subsequent jobs in the state.
While commending engineering firms that have completed their projects, including Phone Village Road, Fire Service, New Haven Market Road, College Road, Dayspring/Lagos Street, Police College, and Agbani Road, the Commissioner reiterated the governor’s determination to connect all roads to enhance movement of people and goods.
Speaking at Premier Layout, Enugu, Engr. Otiji warned contractors against delays, emphasizing that the government had already fulfilled its payment obligations. He stated that it is unacceptable to their government the slow pace at which some of these construction firms are going with their works.
Otiji highlighted the consequences of failing to meet project timelines and announced daily progress tracking. He urged contractors to double their efforts, emphasizing the significance of the ongoing infrastructural revolution in the state.
The Commissioner called on citizens to actively participate in the governance process by monitoring projects and reporting any acts of sabotage or vandalism that could impede the state’s peace and development.
He reaffirmed that Governor Peter Mbah, who had earlier flagged off the construction of 71 urban roads with a December 2023 completion date, is unwavering in his commitment to urban renewal and infrastructural development, declaring a state of emergency on infrastructure to fulfill the Social Contract with the people of Enugu State.
