The House of Representatives has opened an investigation into the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over disturbing reports that some students were forced to take their WASSCE exams around midnight in parts of the country.

Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Examination Bodies, Hon. Oboku Oforji, described the incident as a “gross failure of responsibility,” citing Jalingo as one of the locations where exams reportedly began at 12:00 a.m., raising serious concerns about students’ safety and psychological well-being.

Lawmakers expressed outrage at WAEC’s absence from the hearing, labeling the situation a national embarrassment. Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante and Hon. Billy Osawaru called the actions “inhumane” and “systemic negligence,” demanding full accountability.

The hearing has been rescheduled for Monday, June 2, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., with the House insisting that WAEC’s leadership appear in person to address the allegations.
