An immigration officer has been sentenced to seven years in prison for passport fraud. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) secured the conviction of Mr. Quadri Ismail Adeyinka, a staff member of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The Commission, as stated by its spokesperson, Demola Bakare, said Mr. Adeyinka was found guilty of defrauding Mr. Ovie Justice Ojeffia under the pretense of regularizing his international passport. Adeyinka received N100,000 from Ojeffia but failed to provide the promised service. This led to a petition and subsequent investigation by the ICPC.
The case was heard by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo, Abuja. Mr. Adeyinka faced four counts, including gratification, conferment of corrupt advantage, and cheating, violating the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, and the Penal Code Act.
Justice Onwuegbuzie sentenced Mr. Adeyinka to seven years each for counts one and two, five years for count four, and two years for count three. The sentences will run concurrently.
This case highlights the ICPC’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and uphold integrity within public services.
