On the Foreign Scene
Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has officially declared his intention to run for an eighth term in office.
The 92-year-old leader made the announcement on Sunday via social media, stating he remains determined to serve, despite rising public concerns over his age and ability to govern.
Biya has ruled Cameroon since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. His party, the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, has dominated since independence.
However, cracks are appearing within his camp. Two longtime allies, former Prime Minister Bello Bouba and Minister Issa Tchiroma, have defected to challenge him in the October 12 presidential election.
Opposition leaders Maurice Kamto and Cabral Libii are also in the race, but a divided opposition continues to weaken any united front.
