Authorities in India’s Ladakh region have imposed a curfew following a wave of violent protests demanding statehood and constitutional safeguards.
The demonstrations, which started peacefully, escalated into clashes between protesters and security forces, prompting officials to enforce movement restrictions in key districts.
Local groups and political leaders have been calling for full statehood status and protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, citing concerns over cultural identity, land rights, and political autonomy since Ladakh was carved out of Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory in 2019.
Officials say the curfew is a temporary measure aimed at restoring peace and preventing further escalation, while talks are ongoing between local leaders and the central government.
