Israel to Deport Gaza Flotilla Activists After Naval Interception

Israel announced on Thursday that it will deport pro-Palestinian activists detained at sea while attempting to breach its naval blockade of Gaza. Officials confirmed that none of the vessels in the Global Sumud Flotilla succeeded in reaching Gaza.

The flotilla, made up of around 45 vessels carrying politicians and activists — including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg — departed from European ports last month. The mission aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, where the United Nations has warned of worsening famine conditions.

According to the Israeli foreign ministry, “None of the Hamas-Sumud provocation yachts has succeeded in its attempt to enter an active combat zone or breach the lawful naval blockade.”

Most Vessels Redirected to Ashdod

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis confirmed that 39 ships had been intercepted and redirected to the Israeli port city of Ashdod. He said, “All passengers are in good health. No violence has been exercised.”

Israel stated that the detained activists, including Thunberg, will be processed and deported back to Europe. Photos shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Israeli officials showed activists on board their boats as the deportation process began.

Organizers condemned the naval operation as “illegal” and accused Israel of “intimidation” and “piracy.” They also reported losing communications with several other vessels.

Global Backlash

The interception has drawn sharp international reactions:

  • Hamas condemned the move as “piracy and maritime terrorism.”
  • Spain summoned Israel’s top diplomat in Madrid after confirming that 65 Spanish nationals were on board the flotilla.
  • Turkey denounced the interception as “an act of terrorism” and launched an investigation after Turkish citizens were detained.
  • Colombia announced it will expel all remaining Israeli diplomats from the country.
  • South Africa demanded the immediate release of activists, including Mandla Mandela, the grandson of Nelson Mandela.

Protests have also erupted across Italy, where unions have called for a nationwide strike to pressure the government into taking stronger action against Israel’s blockade.

Previous Attempts Blocked

Israel has blocked several flotilla campaigns earlier in June and July 2025, insisting that its maritime blockade of Gaza is a vital security measure against Hamas.

Despite setbacks, flotilla organizers vowed to press on, saying they remain “committed to breaking the siege and delivering aid to Gaza.”
