The role of women in the family and society came to the fore, as members of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWAOJ, visited and donated items to Community Children’s Home, Awka, as part of activities lined up by the group to mark the International Women’s Day.
The International Women’s Day is a day set aside to celebrate women, while also tackling issues that affect them, such as rape, domestic violence and denial of basic human rights among others.
The item donated to the home were cartons of noodles, dozens of toilet tissue, cartons of milk, detergents, cartons of cabin biscuits amongst others.
Speaking during the visit, the Chairperson of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Anambra State, Mrs. Frankline Onyekachi, noted that women naturally reflect love, which was why they made the visit to contribute their quota towards the upkeep of the children.
Mrs. Onyekachi pointed out that women are special breed and should be cared for, while negative practices against women must stop, and asserted that perpetrators of child abuse and torture especially those recently arrested in Onitsha should be prosecuted.
In her remark, the State Secretary of the group, Uche Nworah, noted that the day is also mapped out to celebrate and honour women and their achievements in various areas of endeavours.
Mrs. Ifeyinwa Iloanya reemphasized the supportive roles of women in the family and society, saying they should supported and encouraged to attain their full potential.
The group was received at the home on behalf of the manager by Mrs. Grace Ndubuisi, who thanked the women journalists for their magnanimity.
Highlights of the visit include presentation of the items to the home and prayers for the group.
