Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Abdullahi Kiyawa, in a statement on Sunday, 19 January, 2026, said the arrests followed directives from the Inspector-General of police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, which were carried out in an intelligence-led operation overseen by the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori.
The suspects are: Umar Auwalu, 23; Isyaku Yakubu (also known as Chebe), 40; and Yakubu Abdulaziz (also known as Wawo), 21.
The PPRO said the suspects were arrested during a sting operation that ran from 10 pm on Saturday to 4 am on Sunday, adding that the investigations unravelled that Auwalu, a nephew of the deceased woman, was the ringleader and confessed to the crime.
The police spokesperson further informed that Auwalu admitted that the group had carried out previous killings, including the murder and burning of two housewives at Tudun Yola Quarters in Kano.
Kiyawa said recovered items include four blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the victims, a cutlass, a club (known locally as gora), some cash, and other dangerous weapons.
