In a strategic move to enhance healthcare training and curb brain drain in the health sector, the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is set to establish a medical university.

Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed this groundbreaking initiative during the inauguration of the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital in Surulere, Lagos. The 80-bed facility, facilitated by Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, aims to address healthcare accessibility.

The governor announced that the medical university is slated to be established in collaboration with the Federal Government before the end of 2024. This visionary step seeks to aggressively scale up health training, ensuring that a significant number of youths receive comprehensive training in the health sector.

Explaining the rationale behind the initiative, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need to graduate between 1,000 and 1,500 doctors annually to meet growing healthcare demands. Additionally, the establishment of the medical university aims to counter the trend of medical professionals leaving the country.

Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed the state’s commitment to providing top-notch facilities to retain and nurture local talents, setting an example for other states to consider similar initiatives.

Commending Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila for his role in facilitating the new hospital, the governor highlighted that the healthcare facility would significantly improve access to quality healthcare in the state.

This move signals a proactive effort by Lagos State to strengthen its healthcare system and ensure a sustainable supply of well-trained professionals for the future. Stay tuned for further updates on this impactful development.
