Emmanuel Macron has announced that France is taking significant actions in response to the coup in Niger as France will withdraw its ambassador and cease all military cooperation with Niger.
Macron stated that the ambassador and diplomats will return to France, and French troops will leave Niger in the coming months.
This decision follows months of tension and protests against the French presence in Niger and has implications for France’s counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel region.
Macron still recognizes the deposed President Mohamed Bazoum as the legitimate authority and considers him a “hostage.”
Additionally, Niger’s coup leaders have banned French aircraft from flying over the country, with some exceptions for commercial flights.
