Maureen Mmadu Football Academy Crown Champion Of Idemili South Female Football Tournament
“On Sunday, August 4th, the Maureen Mmadu Football Academy clinched the prestigious Idemili South Women’s Cup with a commanding 3-0 victory over Raising Star Football Club Ojoto. The tournament, aptly themed ‘Say No to Drug Abuse,’ sought to highlight the harmful effects of drug abuse on females and inspire young girls to chase their dreams in professional football.
Initiated by Hon. Amaka Obi, the TC-Chairman of Idemili South LGA, and supported by Hon. Ofoma Ubakaeze, the event was a collaborative effort, sponsored by the Idemili South LG Council and Love Bite Foods Limited.
Despite the limited number of female teams from Idemili South, the tournament drew a wide array of participants, including female football clubs, school teams, and church teams from both within and outside the LGA. Seven teams competed in two groups, battling it out in intense group stage matches.
In Group A, we had Spots Rays Angels FC, Rising Star FC Queens, Ojoto Girls FT, and Mater Dei FT. Group B featured Queens Sparks Rangers FC, Maureen Mmadu FA, and Samba Queens FC.
After fierce competition, Maureen Mmadu FA emerged victorious, with Rising Star FC Queens Ojoto taking the runner-up position and Spots Rays Angels securing third place. Throughout the tournament, 52 goals were scored, with Nwankwo Nneka of Rising Star FC Queens earning the top scorer title with eight goals.
Maureen Mmadu, the proud proprietor and head coach of the academy and a former Super Falcons player and coach, expressed her joy at her team’s performance. She highlighted the academy’s rapid progress, having already won the Anambra State Women’s FA Cup and securing third place at the Chief Naval Staff NOWA tournament in Enugu.
In her words, ‘I am incredibly happy for this great victory. We are developing so well, and the girls have improved a lot. I am proud of how far we have come despite the challenges. I urge the government, private individuals, companies, and football stakeholders to support the academy, as we have made Anambra State and Nigeria proud.’
The Idemili South Women’s Cup not only showcased the talents of young female footballers but also reinforced the critical message of combating drug abuse through sports, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
