Pro choice activists went on the streets of Argentina to celebrate the legalization of Abortion which is a landmark decision in a country where the Catholic Church has long held sway.
President Alberto Fernandez who sponsored the original bill took to Twitter to say that safe, legal and free abortion is law. He said that they are now a better society that is increasing women’s rights and safeguarding public health.
According to report, President Fernandez, who is Catholic, said that hundreds of thousands of illegal terminations are carried out every year in Argentina with at least 3,000 women dying after backstreet abortions since the 1980s.
Sandra Lujan, a 41 year old psychologist said that they have made history after attempts and years of struggle that cost them blood and lives. She said that with the legalization, they leave a better place for their sons and daughters.
