Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, has raised alarms over the rapid spread of meningitis across Northwest Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi and Sokoto States. Since early March, the outbreak has led to rising cases and deaths, prompting MSF to call for urgent mass vaccination campaigns and preventive measures.
MSF medical teams have been actively treating hundreds of patients, supplying essential medicines, and training healthcare workers. In Kebbi State alone, over 500 patients have been admitted, with more than 60 deaths recorded. Dr. Bukar Galtimari of MSF warned that meningitis can be fatal within 24 hours without early treatment.
To combat the crisis, MSF is partnering with state health authorities to launch mass vaccination campaigns by early April. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has also reported 807 suspected cases and 74 deaths across 22 states as of March 26, 2025.
Meningitis remains a significant health threat in the “African Meningitis Belt,” spanning from Senegal to Ethiopia, where dry and dusty conditions increase epidemic risks. MSF urges swift government action to ensure adequate vaccine supply and prevent further loss of life.
