The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert No. 024/2023, notifying Nigerians about the sale of unwholesome Mayonnaise with the brand name “Whippy Real Mayonnaise” in Nigeria. The alert was released on Monday in Abuja by Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC.
The discovery of the problematic product came after a consumer complaint was received and investigated by NAFDAC’s post-marketing surveillance unit in Ilorin, Kwara State. The affected Mayonnaise was sourced locally from the manufacturer SNF FOODS Limited, based in Onitsha, Anambra State.
To determine the extent of the issue, NAFDAC took random samples from different batches of the product and conducted laboratory analysis in their labs. Unfortunately, the results were unsatisfactory. Although the products were still within their shelf life, they were found to be rancid and had a different color from the original Mayonnaise.
Consumers are urged to be cautious and avoid purchasing this particular brand of Mayonnaise until further notice from NAFDAC.
Consumers are to report any negative effect of the product through the use of the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website www.nafdac.gov.ng.
