The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it spent about 2 million naira to destroy a container load of Tramadol.
The Director General of the agency, Mrs Mojisola Adeyeye, addressing a virtual press briefing, said importation of fake and substandard drugs escalated in the country during the period NAFDAC was not at the ports.
She recalled that for seven years, they were not at the port while importers of dangerous drugs were having a field day.
Mrs Adeyeye regretted that drug abuse had almost become a normal thing in the country, disclosing that many containers of Tramadol were impounded by NAFDAC and destroyed.
She further observed that since NAFDAC returned to the ports, importers of fake and substandard drugs are now diverting their shipment to neighbouring West African countries, but added that the agency was also going after them in those countries.
Adeyeye added that the presence of NAFDAC at the ports has strengthened the fight against fake and substandard drugs, disclosing that at moment, five containers of Tramadol meant for the Nigerian market are in the Benin Republic.
The NAFDAC boss further revealed that Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic is currently making efforts to bring those consignments into the country for destruction.
