Nationwide Hardship Protest: Catholic Bishops Calls For Peaceful Protests

Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province comprising Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara, and Oyo states have advised on Nigerians who are embarking on protests to be peaceful and orderly.

The Bishops gave the advice in a communiqué issued at the end of their meeting in Akure, Ondo State.

The Bishops warned against any disruption in the present democratic setting.

The communiqué signed by the Chairman of the meeting and the Archbishop of Ibadan Catholic Archdiocese, Gabriel Abegunrin, and the Secretary, Bishop John Oyejola, said protests should cause no consternation in any normal democratic setting, because the right to protest is guaranteed in true democracies all over the world.

They however warned the protesters to ensure that they are orderly in the exercise of their constitutional rights.

The Communique read in part; “The protests in Nigeria should be made to serve that purpose and none other.

“The protesters should exercise restraint and not disturb or intimidate those who may choose not to participate in the exercise, knowing that it is their inalienable right not to do so.”
