
It is not news that Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has been at loggerheads with government over unpaid salaries.
However, in the midst of this unpleasant period for them where some academic staff are still owed four – twelve months salaries, ASUU , Nnamdi Azikiwe University, NAU, yesterday put smiles on the faces of 30 well deserving students.
Members of ASUU, NAU, on Wednesday , at the University Auditorium , presented the sum of 1.5 million naira to 30 students who have been excellent in their academic pursuits. The members saw it as an opportunity to alleviate the suffering of the students , who have borne the the pain of the insensitivity of the ruling class in the country. The beneficiaries were selected from various faculties of the university and each student received 50,000 each for the 2019/2020 academic session.
The Vice Chancellor, ably represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor , Prof Joseph Ikechebelu, commended the leadership of ASUU, NAU for the scholarship and encouraged the to keep up the good work . He said it was a corporate social responsibility to emulate , especially at this period when the economy is not encouraging to both parents and sponsors of students. He also thanked the Vice Chancellor for keeping up.with the welfare of the staff of the institution.
The chairman of ASUU, NAU chapter, Comrade Dr Stephen Uforah said that they have discovered that students have taken to part time jobs and menial jobs so they can can meet up with their educational expenses. The ASSU members deemed it fit to task themselves to raise the fund for the scholarship, which he also said will be an annual event, to help reduce school dropouts and the consequences that may follow. He tasked the federal and state government to do their best to make education friendly for the Nigerian students.
Miss Chinelo Anyaorah, who received 100,000 Naira as the Most Indigent Student from the ASUU national body couldn’t contain her joy as she said the money will be able toy offset some bills as life has been difficult for her as an orphan.
ASUU National body also awarded a scholarship to the most deserving student as an evidence that they understand the plight of the students.
The students Union Government President, Comrade Samuel Jude thanked the ASUU, NAU for such largesse.
