The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) has said plans are underway to plant between 45,000 and 70,000 trees in Anambra State as part of the Natural Forestry Trust Fund (NFTF) mandate.

Joseph Onoja, the director, Technical Programme, NCF, made this known at a two-day Anambra Forest-Landscape Restoration Action Plan Workshop in Awka on Friday.

According to Mr Onoja, the planting of the trees was aimed at restoring a healthy ecosystem, promoting nature conservation as well as reversing the trend of environmental devastation – such as flooding and erosion in the state, whose root cause is habitat degradation.

Speaking further, he noted that they were in partnership with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka to hold the workshop and come up with a plan to advocate to policy makers to stop and reverse the trend of the devastation, adding that at the end of the workshop, some officers will stay back to ensure this project is carried out in collaboration with communities, so they can take ownership of the trees after the project.

On the plan to plant 45,000 to 70, 000 trees in Anambra, Onoja also stated that communities in the state had started indicating interest; explaining that trees promote healthier ecosystems, which in turn ensure richer biodiversity, more fertile soils, nature-nurturing human atmosphere, among others.
