The National Economic Council (NEC) has called on organizers of a scheduled #EndSARS protest in commemoration of the one-year anniversary of the demonstrations, to reconsider their plans in favour of national security.

The call was made at the meeting of the council on Friday headed by Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

While appreciating the role of lawful peaceful protests in the advancement of public discourse under democratic governance, the NEC suggested that those planning public protests across the country to mark the anniversary, consider other lawful alternative means of engagement because of the current security situation across the country and the possibility of such protests being hijacked by armed hoodlums.

In a bid to address the concerns raised by the protesting youths, the NEC stated that the government had already taken actions to address the grievances that led to the protests, citing: the disbandment of SARS, police reforms, establishment of judicial panels of inquiries to investigate allegations of human rights violations and subsequent prosecution of police personnel indicted by the panels.
The council also explained that recommendations of the panels were already at various stages of implementation, including the setting up of Victims Compensation Funds from which several victims had received payments.

Recall that thousands of Nigerians came out in protest under the #EndSARS movement last year to protest against police brutality, but the movement was marred by violence which led to loss of lives and property.
