The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to the coup plotters in Niger Republic, indicating that the use of force would be the last resort if they refuse to surrender.
This statement was made by Adamu Lamuwa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a briefing session for the diplomatic corps on the current political situation in Niger and the ECOWAS sub-region.
On July 26, 2023, the democratically elected President, Mohamed Bazoum, was illegally detained by the military coup led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani.
In response, ECOWAS, led by its Chairman and Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, decided on sanctions against the coupists, including freezing financial transactions with Niger and suspending all service transactions, including energy deals.
Lamuwa expressed concerns that if the coup persists, it could tarnish ECOWAS’ reputation and undermine regional stability and democratic principles in the area.
He stressed that the use of force should be the last resort and hoped it would not come to that point.
