The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated a Level Two emergency response following the outbreak of Lassa fever, which has claimed 118 lives across 33 states. Between January and March 2025, 645 cases were confirmed out of 3,465 suspected cases.
NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, says the agency has deployed rapid response teams to affected states, including Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi. Twenty healthcare workers have also been infected.
He noted that challenges such as weak surveillance and limited resources are hindering containment efforts.
The NCDC therefore urges Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene and block rats from accessing homes. Lassa fever spreads through rodent contact, making preventive measures crucial.
