The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has clarified that the closure of Nigeria’s borders with the Niger Republic is not a declaration of war between the two countries, contrary to speculations.
The NCS acting Comptroller General, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, made this assertion during his visit to the Illela border community in Sokoto State.
Adeniyi emphasized that the border closure is not unique to Nigeria but also happening in other West African states that share borders with the Niger Republic.
He reiterated that President Bola Tinubu, as both the Commander in Chief of Nigeria and Chairman of ECOWAS, aims to promote trade within the ECOWAS member countries. However, he stressed that trade can only thrive in a peaceful environment.
He further assured that diplomatic engagements are underway to address the crisis with the authorities in Niger Republic.
The District Head of Illela, Alhaji Buhari Tukur, represented by Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, appreciated the customs chief and assured that the community would continue to respect government policies and remain law-abiding.
