The Federal Government has declared today, Wednesday, May 1, 2024, as a public holiday in honor of Workers’ Day.
The announcement, made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, restated the government’s commitment to excellence, efficiency, and fairness in labor.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to fostering innovation, productivity, and inclusivity in workplaces.
He reiterated the government’s focus on safety and health at work in a changing climate, highlighting the need for a conducive environment where every worker can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The Minister called for proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, stressing the importance of sustainable practices and policies that promote well-being in the workplace.
The 2024 Workers’ Day holds particular significance as it is anticipated that President Bola Tinubu may unveil the newly proposed minimum wage for workers in the country.
The Nigeria Labour Congress has outlined seven demands from the Federal Government ahead of the May 1, 2024 Workers’ Day, including a new minimum wage and the creation of state and local government police to address insecurity.
