Nigeria Rejects Canadian Court’s Terrorist Label on Political Parties

The Federal Government has condemned a Canadian Federal Court’s decision designating some Nigerian political parties as terrorist organizations.

In a statement, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, described the ruling as reckless and an unacceptable interference in Nigeria’s democracy.

The verdict stemmed from a refugee case involving Nigerian national, Douglas Egharevba, in 2017.

Nigeria insists the judgment wrongly targets entire political parties, including one that has produced three presidents, instead of focusing on individuals.
The government urged Canada to withdraw the designation, warning it could tarnish innocent members.

Nigeria reaffirmed its sovereignty, commitment to fighting terrorism, and called on the international community to disregard the ruling.
