The Nigerian government has announced a 50% electricity subsidy for 37 federal universities and seven affiliated teaching hospitals. The subsidy aims to alleviate the financial strain these institutions face due to high electricity costs.
The Minister of State for Health, Tunji Alausa, initially announced the subsidy, stating it would support federal healthcare facilities in providing consistent services. However, it will not extend to private businesses within these institutions.
The Ministry of Power clarified that the subsidy is part of the Energizing Education Programme, which focuses on delivering reliable power to essential services at selected universities and teaching hospitals. The program is designed to ensure continuous operations and enhance service delivery.
The institutions affected by this subsidy are awaiting its implementation, which they say would significantly reduce their operational costs.
