The Nigerian government is battling to save 31.5 million people from a food crisis that is projected to affect 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory from May to August 2024.
The crisis is expected to cause an increase in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from 14,000 to 83,846 if measures are not put in place to curb the trend.
The affected states in the North-East include Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Bauchi, while states in the North-West are Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto. States under pressure in the North-East are Taraba and Gombe, while states in the North-Central are Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, and the FCT. In the North-West, Kebbi, Jigawa, and Kano are affected, and in the South-West, Ogun and Lagos are affected.
In the South-South, Cross River, Edo, and Rivers are affected.
According to report the Federal Government is making efforts to address the situation with various agricultural interventions to boost food production across the country.
