Despite producing only 2.25 million kg compared to Egypt’s 396 million kg, Nigeria’s favorable climate and arable land position it well for expansion. By adopting technology-driven farming practices, Nigeria can enhance garlic yields and increase its contribution to the global market.
According to report, focusing on Northern regions for garlic farming, Nigeria should invest in irrigation, storage facilities, and roads. Providing incentives like subsidies and training to farmers can also encourage cultivation. Establishing trade agreements and promoting value-added processing can further boost exports.
Ayodeji Adepoju, a researcher at the University of Missouri, highlights garlic’s health benefits, including combating metabolic disorders and oxidative stress. He said that with strategic measures, Nigeria can increase garlic production, create jobs, and boost economic growth.
