The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has listed five websites allegedly harvesting Nigerians’ data fraudulently. This announcement follows a warning from Paradigm Initiative about websites selling Nigerians’ National Identification Number (NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN), International Passport, and other personal data.
NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, named the websites as idfinder.com.ng, Verify.Ng/sign in, championtech.com.ng, trustyonline.com, and anyverify.com. He urged the public to disregard these sites and not to provide any personal data, as these sites are potentially fraudulent.
He assured the public that Nigerians’ sensitive data have not been compromised as the Commission has taken robust measures to safeguard the nation’s database, which meets stringent ISO 27001:2013 Information Security Management System Standards.
The Commission also advised Nigerians to avoid unauthorized and phishing sites that pose the danger of data harvesting and compromising individual data. NIMC emphasized that its licensed partners are not authorized to scan or store NIN slips but to verify NINs through approved channels.
He emphasized that NIMC is working closely with security operatives to apprehend those masquerading as online vendors, and they will face the full wrath of the law.
Recall that Pan-African social enterprise, Paradigm Initiative, had earlier raised concerns about unauthorized websites claiming to hold and sell sensitive personal and financial data of Nigerian citizens. This alarming development poses significant risks, including identity theft and financial fraud.
