
2020 New Yam festival of Nimo Kingdom, came to a successful end on Sunday, the 30th of August, with a novelty Ekene O. Maritime Football Tournament and Raffle Draw with the defending champion, Team Atukpolum of Egbengwu Ojideleke emerging as 2020 champion.

The annual competition which usually begins on Easter Monday, was placed on hold as a result of CoronaVirus pandemic.

The event was co-sponsored by Honourable Peter Ibida , state lawmaker for Njikoka two in the Anambra state house of Assembly, Agbalanze Ekenenna
Okafor and Ekene Obeleagu as the chief promoter.

The traditional ruler of Nimo, Igwe Maxi Oliobi, described this year’s New Yam celebration as one in a lifetime experience, while also commending the improvements and innovations introduced by the promoter , Chief Ekene Obeleagu and other co- sponsors of the annual competition.

Igwe Oliobi extolled the men for their kind gestures and show of love to humanity by fighting crime and curbing youth unemployment through youth empowerment, skill acquisition and sporting activities.
The Igwe also commended Honourable Ibida for his quality representation at the state Assembly which according to him, can only be described as firebrand people oriented —legislation.
On his part , the elated Promoter of the competition, Chief Ekene obeleagu Maritime, while speaking to our reporter said that his philosophy of fighting crime is simply keeping the youths busy through sports as well as Small and medium scale businesses which he noted, was his major aim for hosting the annual competition.
Ekene O Maritime further maintained that the just concluded tournament and raffle draw have created jobs for some of the teeming unemployed youths of the community, revealing that the empowerment package for the beneficiaries of raffle draws , will meaningfully improve the financial capacity of the winners.
He admonished winners of the raffle draw and other beneficiaries of other empowerment packages to practice financial discipline, while thanking all the co-sponsors of the event including Igwe Oliobi for what he called fatherly commitment to the project and entire people of Nimo.
He also commended Honourable Ibida for his huge financial commitment, and Agbalanze Ekenenna okafor, for donating shuttle bus for the raffle draw.
Contributing, Agbalanze Ekenenna Okafor thanked all who made the event a success , particularly members of Local organising committee Chika Chijoke, Obinna Egwudike and numerous others for their efforts and prayed God to grant them journey mercies even as they travel back to their various destination.
Other memorable moments of events were the picking of raffles for winners of shuttle buses.
