NSF: Team Anambra Hits 9-Medal Mark, Eyes More In Upcoming Events
Team Anambra is flying the state’s flag high at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games Ogun 2024, with a medal haul of nine—one gold, five silver, and three bronze—bringing renewed hope to Ndi Anambra for quality representation on the national stage.
The medals came from three sports—Taekwondo, Kungfu, and Swimming—where Anambra’s athletes showed resilience, skill, and competitive strength.
In Kungfu, Hope Sunday Otoba claimed gold, showcasing technical brilliance and composure under pressure. Theodosia Odun and Covenant Isaac Sunday added two silver medals to the tally, underlining Anambra’s growing strength in martial arts.
In Taekwondo, Dandy Ogbonna delivered a commendable performance, clinching a silver medal in the middleweight category and a bronze medal in poomsae.
Anambra’s swimming team also made a splash at the Games, winning two silver and two bronze medals. Their achievements highlight the state’s emerging talent in aquatic sports and reflect ongoing investments in broadening Anambra’s sporting strengths beyond combat sports.
This brings the state’s total to nine medals so far—1 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze—a promising sign of what’s to come as more events are yet to begin.
While injuries to some athletes in weightlifting and Kungfu have posed challenges, Team Anambra remains upbeat. With several sporting events still ahead, the team is confident of expanding its medal count and making Ndi Anambra proud.
More medals are expected from Athletics, Scrabble, Volleyball, Badminton Mixed Doubles, Chess, Table Tennis, among others, as Anambra continues to push forward with high hopes and determined performances.
Head Coach Jude Nwafor has encouraged coaches and athletes alike to remain focused and push for podium finishes. “This is just the beginning,” he said. “We are aiming higher and still have a lot to achieve before the festival ends.”
This promising performance is a testament to the continued efforts of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, led by Chairman Hon. Patrick Estate Onyedum. Under his leadership, the commission has intensified its focus on grassroots sports development, athlete training, and competitive exposure.
Hon. Onyedum’s vision for a stronger, better-represented Anambra in national sports is beginning to take shape, as seen in the determination and discipline of the state’s athletes.
As the Gateway Games progress, the people of Anambra can remain hopeful that their team will not only increase its medal count but also continue to represent the state with pride, discipline, and excellence.
