Few days after a new traditional ruler was elected in Ogbunka, elders of the community have embarked on a peaceful protest at the Anambra state Government House Awka to demand for a free and fair Igweship election in the community.

The elders were led by the Chairman Ogbunka Igwe’s Cabinet, Chief Christian Ifeanacho and accompanied by the President General of the community, Mr Emmanuel Okolo, men and women of the community, and as well the youths who were seen with placards with inscriptions that revealed their grievances.

The inscriptions on the placards showed that the people are demanding for Dr Forster Ihejiofor as their Traditional Ruler against Chief Johnmark Anyaoha who according to them was allegedly imposed on the community as their traditional ruler last weeks.

The Chairman of the Ogbunka Igwe’s Cabinet, Chief Ifeanacho and the President General of the community, Mr Okolo called on Anambra state government to conduct an election for both parties and allow members of the community to make their choices among the two.

One of the elders, Chief Charlie Anunuobi described imposition of traditional rulers on the people as a taboo in the community and as well the entire Igbo Land, as according to him, traditional rulers from time immemorial are selected by members of the community involved.

Responding, the state Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs, Mr Greg Obi told the people of Ogbunka that the government of Anambra state has not endorsed any one as the Traditional Ruler of the community, saying that the government will take critical look into the community’s issue and will definitely allow the will of the people to prevail.
