Georgia reported 11 deaths, including an emergency responder, while Florida confirmed five fatalities, and one person died in North Carolina due to a fallen tree.
Residents and officials are concerned this might signal a “new normal” of frequent severe storms, as similar weather events have occurred in recent years.
President Biden and state authorities had urged people to evacuate, and the National Guard was mobilized for rescue operations.
