Morocco has recorded its first case of mpox in the tourist city of Marrakesh, marking the first case in North Africa since the World Health Organization declared an international emergency last month.

According to the Africa CDC, the 32-year-old patient tested positive and is receiving treatment in stable condition. Moroccan authorities have activated emergency measures, including contact tracing and epidemiological investigations.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, can be transmitted through close contact and causes fever, muscle aches, and skin lesions. So far, no other contacts of the patient have shown symptoms.

This case brings the number of affected African Union member states to 15. Since the start of the year, over 26,000 cases have been reported across Africa, with 724 deaths.
