A passenger jet carrying 64 people collided mid air with a military helicopter and crashed into Washington’s Potomac River in the early hours of today. Officials say there are likely no survivors.
Washington Fire Chief John Donnelly confirmed 28 bodies have been recovered, including one from the helicopter, as rescue efforts were hampered by freezing conditions and strong winds.
The Bombardier jet, operated by an American Airlines subsidiary, was approaching Reagan National Airport from Wichita, Kansas, when it collided with a US Army Black Hawk on a training flight. Air traffic recordings show controllers repeatedly asking the helicopter if it saw the plane.
However, investigations are still ongoing, with officials calling the crash preventable
