Britain’s Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), says transgender women should not use women’s toilets, following a landmark Supreme Court ruling.
The court had ruled that under the Equality Act 2010, a woman is legally defined by her biological sex at birth.
In response, the EHRC issued interim guidance advising that workplaces and public spaces like shops and hospitals restrict toilet use based on birth sex.
However, the commission stressed that transgender individuals must still have access to unisex toilets where available.
Government minister Pat McFadden told the press there would be no “toilet police,” but facilities should follow the biological sex rule.
The EHRC also announced that further guidelines, particularly for transgender participation in competitive sports, will be published soon.
