The US Supreme Court has blocked former President Donald Trump’s move to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act.
In a 7-2 ruling on Friday, the court said the migrants, held in Texas, were not given enough notice or legal opportunity to challenge their deportation.
Trump had used the obscure wartime law to bypass normal legal procedures in deporting suspected members of the Tren de Aragua gang.
The justices clarified they were not ruling on whether the law can be used this way, only that due process was denied. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented.
