The United States’ average tariff rate has surged to 20.1%, the highest since the early 1910s, according to new data from the WTO and IMF. This comes after new duties took effect Thursday under President Donald Trump’s latest executive order.
Tariffs now range between 15% and 41%, affecting imports from major trade partners including the EU, Japan, South Korea, and India. Trump says “billions of dollars” are now flowing into the US from tariffs, celebrating the move on his Truth Social platform.
Economists warn that current rates exceed those of the 1930s a period linked to the Great Depression and could impact global trade if escalations continue.
