On the Foreign Scene

Despite rejecting previous peaceful overtures from external organizations, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the leader of the Niger junta, has announced that the military is willing to engage in discussions with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

This statement was made during a meeting with Islamic scholars from Nigeria where Tchiani conveyed that they were open to pursuing diplomacy and peace to resolve the ongoing impasse.

Islamic scholars, led by Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau of the Izala sect in Nigeria, held talks with the junta in Niger’s capital, Niamey, where they discussed various matters, including ECOWAS’s demand for the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum.

Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine confirmed that the leader of the country expressed openness to dialogue and anticipated that talks with ECOWAS would occur within the upcoming days.

There is hope that the discussions would lead to the lifting of imposed sanctions against Niger.
