On the foreign scene

The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary Anne DiCarlo, has issued a warning about the crisis unfolding in Sudan. DiCarlo emphasized that the war in Sudan has led to a ‘crisis of epic proportions,’ fueled by weapons from foreign supporters in violation of U.N. sanctions. She condemned this external support, labeling it as illegal and immoral, insisting that it must cease.

The sanctions, imposed on Sudan through Resolution 1591, include an embargo on arms and ammunition, alongside assets freezes, specifically targeting parties involved in the conflict in Darfur.

Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Chairman of the African Union Panel on Sudan, echoed concerns about external interference, citing it as a major obstacle to achieving a cease-fire and ending the war. While specific foreign supporters were not named, reports suggest involvement from countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt.

Despite ongoing peace efforts, the conflict persists, prompting Sudanese representatives to call for locally-driven solutions.

The humanitarian crisis was also highlighted, with over 14,000 dead, tens of thousands wounded, and millions in desperate need of assistance. Millions have been displaced from their homes since the conflict erupted on April 15th last year. According to Edem Wosornu, the U.N. humanitarian office’s director of operations, violence between Sudan’s military and paramilitary forces, notably the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), continues unabated, with recent attacks targeting the capital of North Darfur, El Fasher.
