Some indigent secondary and primary school students in Anambra State were over the weekend, awarded scholarships by a non-governmental body, Save and Secure the Child Initiative, Anambra State chapter.
Speaking during the event in the Anambra State capital, Awka, the State Principal of the organization, Mr. Kingsley Obi, described the exercise as a way of putting smiles on the faces of indigent students in the state.
According to Mr. Obi, the event which took place at the St. Paul’s University auditorium Awka, is a yearly event by the organization as part of their campaign against child abuse and neglect in the state.
In his speech, the sponsor of this year’s event and a co-founder of the organization, Mr. Paul Anezeofor, explained that the scholarship scheme was an opportunity for him to provide support to some indigent children in the state and to thank God for his mercies in his life.
Mr. Anaezeofor called on some affluent members of the state to invest in the education of some disadvantaged children in the state to ensure a better future for them and reduce the rise of some social vices in the state.
The Chairman of the occasion, Doctor Emmanuel Ojukwu, described investing in the education of children as one of the factors of state and national development.
The Director, Institute of Theology, St. Paul University Awka, Ven. Rex Kanu, advised the recipients to take their studies seriously and contribute in the development of the nation.
Highlights of the occasion include the award of the scholarships and presentation of some school supplies to the thirty-nine recipients.
