The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a couple, Kingsley Okoye 36 years and Chidinma Okoye 27 years, for allegedly sending threatening messages and attempting to extort and kidnap individuals.
The arrests, made in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, followed a joint operation by the police and local vigilante groups, leveraging technology-driven intelligence.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga revealed that the suspects specialized in sending abduction threats via text messages, demanding ransoms under the threat of kidnapping or murder. During interrogation, they confessed to their crimes and admitted to destroying SIM cards used for their illegal activities.
The operation also recovered phones and SIM cards linked to their criminal activities.
State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the anti-kidnapping/robbery squad for a comprehensive investigation. The suspects will face court proceedings upon the investigation’s conclusion.
This development underscores the Anambra Police Command’s commitment to tackling threats and ensuring the safety of residents.
