Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, has denied the report that seven suspects in the killing of Anambra lawmaker, Justice Azuka, have died in custody.
The suspects reportedly died from tetanus caused by gunshot wounds.
The source said, “They have travelled ( died). That’s all I can tell you. We suspect they died of tetanus occasioned by bullet wound injuries..Seven of them,” the source said.
However, while debunking the report, the PPRO said, “Please ignore such information. Though some of them
sustained gunshot injuries before their arrest, notwithstanding.
“Assuming you were there in both first and second parade of the suspects involved, you would have seen them,” The PPRO said
This development follows the escape of two other suspects in the matter who were being led by police personnel to an accomplice’s location.
The escape has sparked outrage, with allegations of corrupt means facilitating their escape.
The incident allegedly led to the removal of the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, CSP Ifeanyi Iburu.
Meanwhile, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has vowed to re-arrest the fleeing suspects and reorganize the Rapid Response Squad unit to ensure accountability and transparency.
Governor Soludo recently visited the Rapid Response Squad formation in Akwuzu, where CP Orutugu briefed him on efforts to re-arrest the fleeing suspects and reform the facility.
Justice Azuka’s killing has been shrouded in controversy, with calls for justice and transparency in the investigations.
