Police operatives in Anambra nab Seven armed robbery suspects, recover firearms/ammunition as 8 Suspected Cultists are caught in raids

Anambra State Police Command says during the week under review, its men recorded cases of interest to members of the public.

According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, on the 19th of this month, following an intelligence report, police operatives attached to Oko Division arrested one Blessing Uche Marcel Ukogu, a male, aged about 25 years, of Akabor Village, Osunmeyi in Nnewi South Council Area, but residing at Abo-Dutse, Abuja.

Haruna said the suspect allegedly stole a Toyota Corolla model 2005 from Abuja, adding that the suspect and exhibit have been handed over to FCT Command for further investigation.

The PPRO also disclosed that on the 21st of this month, at about 11:30am, also following intelligence report, police operatives attached to 3-3 Division, in collaboration with the local vigilante group, arrested one Debele Chukwu Mbanugo, a male, aged 20 years, of Nkwelle Ezunaka.

Haruna informed that exhibit recovered in his possession include one pump action rifle which he admitted to have stolen from 3-3 Police Station during the #Endsars protests.

Furthermore, the PPRO said that also on 21st of this month, at about 8:am, following an intelligence report, police operatives attached to Okija Division, arrested one Chinaza Okoma, male, aged 25 and Onyebuchi Maduka, male, aged 24 years, both of 3-3 area, Onitsha.

He disclosed that the suspects were arrested inside a residential apartment at Oghalebu, Okija with two pump action rifles, and eleven cartridges which they could not give satisfactory account of.

Also on 22nd of this month, according to Haruna, at about 9:am, following an intelligence report, Puff Adder operatives, in conjunction with a police patrol team attached to Ogbaru Division, arrested one Ebuka Obaze, a male, aged 22 years, of Ochuche Village, Umuodo in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He said exhibit recovered in his possession include a cut to size locally made double barrel gun.

While on the 23rd also of this month, Puff Adder operatives, in conjunction with a patrol team attached to Otoucha Division, responded to a distress call around Igbariam and arrested one Paul Odowe, a male, aged 29 years, from Ebonyi State, who allegedly robbed a lady of her handset and other valuables at gunpoint.

The PPRO said he voluntarily confessed and exhibits recovered in his possession include 3 phones, one pump action rifle, one cartridge and one unregistered motorcycle used in perpetrating the act.

Again on the 26th of this month, at 12:30am, following an intelligence report, a Police patrol team attached to Inland Town Division, arrested one Bright Blessed Nnakwe, a male, aged 27 years, of Umueze Village, Anam in Anambra West Council Area, and exhibits recovered in his possession include one English made pistol and a magazine.

The State’s Police spokesman further revealed that on 24th of this month, at about 6:30am, following credible intelligence report about a secret cult initiation, police operatives attached to the Command Special Anti-Cult Unit, arrested the following suspects:
(i).Duru David, male, aged 22 years;
(ii).Ugochukwu Meniru, male, aged 20 years;
(iii). Chukwudi Nwaoba, male, aged 20 years;
(iv). Chukwudi Kalu, male, aged 18 years and,
(v). Nnayelu Oputa, also male, aged 18 years.

The PPRO said the suspects confessed to be members of a secret cult group called, “PAYTON CONFRATERNITY”.

Haruna also intimated that on 26th of this month, at about 5:40am, following an intelligence report, police operatives attached to the Command Anti-Cult Unit, arrested the following suspects from various hideouts at Ogidi in Idemili North Council Area of Anambra State. They are:-

(i). Okpoto Chukwudi, male, aged 20 years;
(ii).Odo Arinze, also male, aged 22 years;
(iii).Eze Izuchukwu, male, aged 23 years, all natives of Izamgbo Town in Ohaumwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

He said suspects voluntarily confessed to be members of “Vikings Confraternity”.

Haruna added that exhibits recovered in their possession include one axe and beret.

The PPRO that all cases are under investigation after which suspects will be charged to court for prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer has hinted that a total of fifteen suspects, four pump action rifles, one English made pistol, one locally made gun and eleven cartridges, were recovered.

He recalled that on the 23rd February this year, the Commissioner of Police CP Monday Bala Kuryas, had during his maiden press conference, promised to tackle the menace of armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, illegal revenue collections and other security challenges in the state. 

The CP also visited black spots and flashpoints at Enugu-Agidi, Ukwulu roads; Toll Gate, Borromeo  roundabou; Head Bridge, Onitsha; Upper Iweka; Owerri Road/Aba Park and Nkpor Roundabout in Idemili North Local Government Area.

He informed that the purpose of the visits was for local knowledge and to obtain first hand information about the pattern of crimes being perpetrated in those areas with a view to curtailing them through effective deployment and visibility patrols.
