- CP Echeng Echeng, Insists the Police Will not be Destracted
The Nigerian Police Force will be conducting a two-day show of force ahead of the November sixth Anambra State governorship election to warn criminal individuals and groups planning to foment trouble.
The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, revealed that thirty-four thousand, five hundred and eighty-seven personnel would be deployed for the Anambra State election following a security threat analysis carried out by the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB).
He said the personnel would be selected from twenty-seven state police commands, including Anambra State.
Personnel from the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, command and visiting police officers from the IGP’s secretariat, force headquarters, and others, will also be in the state for the election.
According to the police operation order, the Divisional Police Officers across the state’s land borders such as Ndoni/Ogbaru in Rivers State, Asaba/Ogbaru in Delta State and others are to ensure the lockdown of the borders.
Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorist Unit and military officers would be equally deployed to enforce restrictions of movement along the identified roads throughout the period of the election.
There would also be a show of force on Thursday, November fourth, at about 9:30am, and a repeat of it on Friday, November fifth, at about 8am in all the three senatorial districts of Anambra.
In another development, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Echeng Echeng, has reiterated that the Command under his watch, will not be distracted from delivering on the core mandates of the Nigeria Police Force, especially as its concerns enhancing public security, peace and safety in the State, as well as ensuring respect for the fundamental rights of citizenry.
He stated this while reacting to the publication by an online media outfit, purportedly suggesting that an Area Commander led a team of Policemen to attack and brutalize an agent of Tricycle Riders Association along Owerri Road in Onitsha.
He described the report as untrue, malicious, fictitious and the handiwork of mischief-makers.
He said to set the records straight, a careful review of the video clip clearly shows that there was nothing of the Police or a Policeman in the scene.
The Police Commissioner also said the unfounded fabrication is a product of criminal elements and mischief-makers, who the Command had since dislodged and stopped from perpetrating all manner of crimes and criminality in the said location, including robbing travelers of their belongings and using the location as venue for illegal revenue collection.
The CP described the publication as unfortunate, and warned its originators and peddlers to desist forthwith, as they will not be spared if apprehended.
He further noted that Officers and Men of the Command remain in high spirit and committed to combating all forms of crime and criminality in the State.
