President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to refrain from exploiting the country’s current economic challenges for excessive profits. In an interview with The Nation on Sunday, Tinubu acknowledged the severe impact of the economic crisis and emphasized the global challenge of rising living costs. The president called for citizens to exercise restraint and not take advantage of the situation for unfair gains, stating that as the president, he is deeply aware of the economic crisis’s severe impact on Nigerians, and also as part of a global challenge with the rising costs of living. He said that to help the people, his administration is taking proactive steps.
He further urged Nigerians to be mindful of the economic situation and avoid engaging in activities that could lead to abnormal profits. In response to the economic challenges, Tinubu highlighted the administration’s proactive measures and the launch of conditional cash transfers to 15 million households in October.
Despite criticism on social media, Tinubu defended the scheme, expressing confidence in its efficacy to provide relief to the most vulnerable segments of the population. He emphasized the strategic nature of the assistance, particularly during the last three months of the year when the prices of basic items typically rise.
President Tinubu concluded by mentioning collaboration with key stakeholders to refine and improve these programs, including state governments, civil society groups, international partners, and private sector entities like telcos and fintechs.
