Scores of Nigerians took to the streets of Abuja on Monday, protesting against rising fuel costs, chronic shortages, and worsening economic hardship. Organized by Abdullahi Bilal of the Two Million Man March Against Oil Scam Cabal, alongside Barrister Napoleon Otache and Olayemi Isaac from Citizens and Economic Freedom Rights Activists in Nigeria (CEFRAN), the demonstrators demanded urgent reforms in the nation’s oil sector. They condemned the current fuel subsidy regime, claiming it enriches a few at the expense of millions, and called for full deregulation to foster transparency and fair pricing.
Protesters highlighted the impact of inflated fuel prices and shortages, which they say have driven inflation above 24% and pushed millions deeper into poverty. They also criticized the ongoing importation of adulterated fuel, which damages vehicles and businesses, and demanded an immediate halt to the practice.
Additionally, they voiced disappointment over the unfulfilled promise of the Dangote Refinery to alleviate Nigeria’s fuel crisis. Calling for accountability, the protesters urged President Bola Tinubu to overhaul the oil sector’s leadership and prioritize citizens’ welfare.
