Fresh protests hit Kassa community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, after gunmen killed three members of a local vigilante group.
The protesters, mainly women and youths blocked the Jos–Barkin Ladi highway.
It was learnt that the attackers invaded the community around 1am on Friday, September 24, 2026, opening fire on vigilantes who were keeping watch over the area.
The incident occurred only four days after the Plateau State Government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas following series of attacks and killings in the areas.
The killings reportedly triggered anger among residents, particularly women and youths, who took to the streets and blocked the major highway linking the community with Mangu.
It was also gathered that the protesters asked soldiers stationed in the area to leave, expressing frustration over the repeated attacks despite the presence of security personnel.
The spokesman of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the attack and described the deaths as “sad and disturbing.”
Tengwong said the victims were killed while protecting their community, adding that their deaths had heightened fear among residents.
He said the vigilantes had played an important role in community security by keeping watch and responding to threats.
The BYM spokesman urged security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
He called for urgent measures to strengthen the protection of communities in Barkin Ladi and other parts of Plateau State.
Also, one of the protesters, Mrs Esther Pam, said that residents were becoming increasingly frustrated by the loss of lives.
“We are tired of people being killed and security operatives would just sit and do nothing. We urge them to go after the attackers,” she lamented.
