Relatives of passengers of the Indonesian, Sriwijaya Air passenger plane which crashed into the sea minutes after take off on the 9th of January 2021, scattered flowers at the crash site on Friday, in memory of their loved ones.
According to media reports, the memorial, which saw dozens of relatives toss red petals from the deck of a navy ship came as the search for human remains and wreckage ended 2 weeks after the incidence occurred, even as investigation continues, to uncover details around the crash.
There were reportedly 50 passengers – including 7 children and 3 babies – and 12 crew on board.
So far, 47 victims have been identified through fingerprints and DNA matches to living family.
Although a flight data recorder has been retrieved, the hunt continues for a cockpit voice recorder from the plane which, according to National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) investigator, Nurcayho Utomo, will show discussions between the pilots before the crash and help identify it’s cause.
The crash probe is likely to take months, but a preliminary report is expected next month.
The Sriwijaya Air passenger plane had departed from Jakarta’s main airport at 14:36 local time (07:36 GMT) on 9 January and was en route to the city of Pontianak on Borneo island.
Minutes later, at 14:40, the last contact was recorded.
